Public Playground Inspections & Other Services

Public playgrounds are a staple of childhood adventure, challenge, and development.  Ensuring a safe play environment is essential to children's ability to play, explore and challenge themselves.  Regular inspections, testing, and maintenance are the components that help to provide a safe play space for children over the life span of the equipment.

Inspections Offered:

Audits:

An Audit is typically only performed when new playground equipment is installed prior to opening for use. An audit may also be performed after a major renovation to the playground or if no prior audits or inspections are on file for a playground. This inspection should be performed by a CPSI.

Low Frequency Inspections:

These are the inspections that are performed annually. This inspection should be performed by a CPSI.

High Frequency Inspections:

These are more frequent inspections that occur on a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis depending on the customers' needs and the amount of traffic on the playground.  Typically, these are performed by on-site maintenance or park employees that have been trained by a CPSI.  If the playground is located in a smaller municipality or Homeowners Association that does not have on-site dedicated staff, we can perform such inspections.  This is when minor maintenance items will be addressed such as replacement labels, raking displaced loose fill mulch back into place, or doing spot loose fill replenishments in areas where raking will not bring an individual area back into compliance.

All of the above equipment audit/inspections are accompanied by a full written report documenting the conditions of the playground equipment, surrounding environment, and accessibility.

TRIAX Impact Testing System:

This type of testing assesses the ability of the playground surfacing to absorb an impact when a child falls from an elevated height to the surfacing below. This test is crucial in determining the surface materials ability to meet the standards set forth by the ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials).  Specific ASTM Standards include ASTM F355, ASTM F1292, and ASTM F3313.  These standards are written to ensure that the surfacing materials meet or exceed the safety requirements.

Impact Testing looks specifically at Head Impact Criteria (HIC) and GMAX. The HIC value represents the potential for head injury during a fall, whereas the GMAX assesses the deceleration experienced upon impact which determines if the surfacing material can adequately absorb the shock from the impact, minimizing the severity of the injury. This test should be performed upon installation of surfacing on a new playground before opening for use, when surfacing is replaced or replenished, as well as annually thereafter.

Other Services:

In addition to inspections, we provide the following services:

Consultation Services:

Consultation services include evaluation of aging equipment, maintenance options, and pre-planning for either major renovations to extend the life of the existing equipment or planning for a complete replacement.  Consultation services also include the assistance to our clients when faced with questions of replacement parts, refinishing parts, etc. to ensure that the work being performed on the playground is appropriate in a playground environment and meets ASTM Standards and CPSC Guidelines.

We also provide assistance for smaller municipalities and Homeowners Association to establish a written playground protocol policy.  This includes a written and digital policy, inspection forms, accident forms, maintenance request form etc. This is the responsibility of the owner/operator to have, adhere to, and maintain over the life of the equipment and will become a valuable resource years down the road when replacement parts are needed or to defend against litigation to show proper protocol.

Project Management:

Project management services provide the oversite of a new playground installation and/or major renovation to ensure that the work being performed meets current ASTM Standards and CPSC Guidelines.

Design and Implementation:

Design and Implementation services entails working with our clients on new playground spaces as well as complete renovations whereas we take on the design, planning, vendor selection, contract negation, site work, execution of the project from start to finish.
