Hidden Dangers

Current statistics from the Consumer Product Safety Commission repors that more than 200,000 children are injured on playgrounds each year with injuries that require emergency room treatment.  75% of these injurs occur on public playground equipment.  Lack of propery supervision is a factor in 40% of all playground incidents. Of the incidents reported:

  • 67% involve falls or equipment failure

  •   8% hazards around but not related to the equipment

  •   7% collisions with other children or equipment

  •   7% entrapments

  • 11% other

Approximately 15% of the injuries recorded were classified as severe, with 3% requiring hospitalization.  40 deaths were associated with playground equipment between 2001-2008.  Of the deaths reported, 27 were the result of hanging or other asphyxiations and 7 were the result of head or neck injuries. The average age of the deaths recorded during this period was 6 years of age with a median age of 4 years.
